Unit 5: How Does the Constitution Protect Our Basic Rights?

You have learned that one of the most important purposes of government is to protect the basic rights of the people. The addition of the Bill of Rights to the Constitution was intended to achieve that purpose.

Adding the Bill of Rights, however, did not automatically guarantee these valued rights to all the people. In this unit, you will learn about five fundamental rights and how they have been extended to many people who were denied them in the past.
