The Year Ahead

It should be an exciting year for the Center and for civic education in the United States as more Americans awaken to the realization that our nation's future depends on the informed participation of citizens in local, state, and national government. This year will include two We the People national competitions, a new We the People middle school ebook, a Project Citizen National Showcase, Constitution Day, and the November elections. We the People State Competition Roundup

November 19 marked the beginning of the 2013-14 We the People state competition season, with South Dakota hosting their finals and naming a new champion in Jeannine Gibson's class from St. Thomas More High School in Rapid City. Since then, nearly 1,000 students have showcased their constitutional knowledge before panels of judges in simulated congressional hearings at the state level. Policy Brief: "Government and Civil Society Cooperation on Civic Education Policy: Experiences in the Americas"

The Center and the Organization of American States collaborated to develop this publication about civic education policy development in the Americas. The policy brief features ideas for effective policy collaboration and examples from Civitas International Programs partners. Learn more.
 

International Conference on Education for Democratic Citizenship

The Moroccan Center for Civic Education will host â??Educating Youth for Democratic Futures,â? an international conference on education for democratic citizenship, from February 26 to March 1. International registration has been extended through the end of January. Learn more.

Foundation Advances Democracy Education in Taiwan

The Civic and Law-Related Education (CLRE) Foundation in Taiwan is a nonprofit organization that began its programming in 2003 and has experienced significant success over the past decade. Spurred by the interest of Taiwanese attorneys to help the country invest in high-quality civic education for democracy and with the support of Taiwanâ??s Rotary Clubs, the Foundation has developed and disseminated curricula marked by "active learning" and high levels of civic engagement. Civitas Armenia Awarded UNDEF Grant

The Armenian Center for Democratic Education-CIVITAS, the Center for Civic Education's Civitas International Programs partner in Armenia, will implement "Democracy and Human Rights Education in Armenia" with a grant from the United Nations Democracy Fund. The two-year project seeks to prepare a generation of active and accountable citizens committed to the fundamental values and principles of democracy and human rights. Learn more.

Law-Related Education Teacher of the Year Award

The American Lawyers Alliance is soliciting nominations for its 2014 Law-Related Education Teacher of the Year Awards. The awards honor middle and high school teachers who have made significant contributions in the area of law-related education. Each of three winners receives a $1,500 cash award. Apply by April 15. Apply by March 17 for the Supreme Court Summer Institute!

Street Law, Inc., and the Supreme Court Historical Society will sponsor two sessions of the annual Supreme Court Summer Institute, June 19-24, 2014, and June 26-July 1, 2014. The Institute is open to secondary-level social studies teachers and supervisors, who will spend six stimulating days on Capitol Hill and inside the Supreme Court learning about the Court, its past and current cases, and how to teach about them from top Supreme Court litigators and educators. Participants will also be in the Court to hear the justices announce the final decisions of the term and attend a private reception at the Court. The application deadline is March 17, 2014. White House Film Festival Perfect for We the People and Project Citizen Students

Do your students participate in Project Citizen, We the People, or use the We the People enhanced ebook? Consider entering the White House Film Festival. To enter, your K-12 students create a three-minute video addressing at least one of the following themes: (1) how you currently use technology in your classroom or school or (2) the role technology will play in education in the future.
