Happy Holidays and a Message for the New Year from Christopher R. Riano
At the end of a year filled with extraordinary hardship and uncertainty, it's important to glance backward and take stock of what these disruptions mean for our work in civic education. The pandemic has changed how we live and work, and for many of us, the work of civic education has depended on reliable internet connections for remote learning and virtual meetings. My first six months as president of the Center for Civic Education have brought many challenges and also incredible opportunities.

We the People State Competitions Have Begun!
Despite the ongoing public health emergency brought on by the Covid-19 epidemic, state We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution competitions are taking place across the country. Most competitions are taking place using videoconferencing software. In Indiana, Hamilton Southeastern High School, led by teacher Janet Chandler, won the state competition. North Carolina's Raleigh Charter High School (pictured at left), led by teacher Shayne Klein, placed first in the state competition. South Carolina's River Bluff High School, led by teacher Linsy Dooley, won that state's competition. In Wyoming, teacher Michael Thomas led his class at Sheridan High School to a first-place finish. Lincoln East High School and teacher Kevin Rippe took first-place honors in Nebraska, and Denver's East High School with teacher Matthew Fulford won the Colorado state championship. Teams placing first in state competitions qualify for the We the People National Finals, being held online on April 23 through 26, 2021. We the People National Alumni Leadership Council Committees Formed
The We the People National Alumni Leadership Council recently formed several committees to advance the Center for Civic Education's mission in key areas. Six committees were formed: Alumni Programming, Annual Fund, Awards, Center Programming, Outreach and Communications, and Recent Alumni. The Leadership Council needs your help! If you are a We the People alum interested in getting involved in the We the People Alumni Network, please fill out this form. We will be contacting alumni in early 2021 about getting involved.

U.S. Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina Supports Project Citizen Students' Efforts
Civitas Bosnia and Herzegovina's End of Year Review video includes the U.S. Ambassador's recognition of the more than 30,000 students in Bosnia and Herzegovina who participated in Project Citizen in 2020. Ambassador Eric Nelson applauded the young students' leadership in fighting for issues they care about and getting their fellow students, communities, and local leaders to join their efforts. The Project Citizen curricular program, developed by the Center, has been adapted for use in more than seventy countries.
