Gorham was born in Massachusetts in 1738.
He received little formal education, becoming an apprentice to a merchant at age 15.
He was active in state politics and supported the revolutionary cause.
Gorham served in the Continental Congress, including a period as its president, and was an important member of the Philadelphia Convention, speaking often and serving on various committees.
He worked to gain approval of the Constitution in Massachusetts.
Gorham is one of the few delegates to the convention who did not serve in the new government.
