(1746-1823)
James McClurg was born 1746 in Virginia, the state he later represented at the Philadelphia Convention.
He traveled to Scotland to study medicine.
After receiving his degree in 1770, he studied in Paris and London.
In 1773, he returned to Virginia, where he served as physician general and director of hospitals during the Revolution.
He was named a delegate to the Philadelphia Convention when Patrick Henry and Richard Henry Lee refused to attend.
He did not sign the Constitution, which he had hoped would include a life term for the president and federal veto authority over state laws.
McClurg’s involvement in politics after the convention was minimal, as he chose to devote his time to medicine.
