A group of We the People state coordinators has formed a Center Programs Task Force to promote the curricular programs of the Center for Civic Education. The task force will use surveys and focus groups to investigate ways to support and sustain the Center's programs.
For more than 30 years, We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution and Project Citizen have been available as civic education programs for school districts and teachers throughout the United States and its territories. Many state coordinators recognize the excellence of these resources and have seen how students and teachers who have been involved in these programs have benefited from them throughout their lives.
We the People and Project Citizen alumni consistently remember their experiences as one of the most memorable of their early education. Twelve state and former state We the People and Project Citizen teachers and state coordinators are involved in the task force, representing regions and states from across the United States.
"Since initiating our task force, our areas of discussions have looked at the strengths of the Center’s programs as well as the obstacles teachers and coordinators face in today’s civic education arena," said Marcie Taylor-Thoma, Maryland state coordinator of the We the People Programs. "Together with input from current and former state coordinators and civic educators we, as a task force, will make recommendations to the Center’s administration and the Center’s Board of Directors in preserving and promoting these programs going forward. But, as we stated, we need your input in this endeavor."
The task force plans to send two separate surveys to state coordinators and teachers following the June 3 We the People State Coordinator Conference. This will be followed by a focus group later in the summer to cement viable recommendations to put these programs into the hands of more teachers and school districts.
